Access to Information & Documents

In fulfilling the role of an effective Council which is responsive to the needs of the community and which operates within the legal framework prescribed by the Local Government Act 1999, the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters (the Council) is fully committed to the principle of open and accountable government.

The Council does, however also recognise that on a limited number of occasions it may be necessary in the interests of the broader community to restrict public access to particular information or documents.

Whilst some documents are available to the community as "public" docments. (for example, agendas and minutes of Council meetings, policies, etc) from time to time, members of the community may wish to access other documents or information.

Under the Freedom of Information Act 1991, all residents have a legal right of access to documents held by the Council (subject to some exemptions).

The Freedom of Information Act 1991 enables residents to:

  • access documents within the Council's possession (subject to some exemptions); and
  • amend documents that relate to them that are incomplete, incorrect, out-of-date or misleading.

In order to lodge a request for access to documents or to amend documents that relate to you an application form must be completed and lodged at the Council along with the relevant fee.

Request for Access to Information Guidelines and Application Forms are available from the Council's Customer Service Centres or can be downloaded by clicking here.

The Council, in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 1991 has publised an Information Statement which sets out, amongst other things, the Council's decision making structure, how members of the community can participate in the decision making process, the types of documents which are available to members of the community and the services the Council provides.

The Information Statement is reviewed annually.
